Collegiate Entrepreneur of the Year: Manuel Furmento

This young man is a perfect example of what it means to be a creative, hardworking, and determined young entrepreneur. About three years ago he came up with the idea for a unique TV mount and started developing it. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to bring his product to life. He’s developed a working prototype, which not only proves his design works but has also opened the door for testing, feedback, and potential partnerships. He had the strategic foresight to secure a provisional patent to protect his innovation and he is already planning a second prototype to fine-tune the product even further. What really sets him apart is his commitment. He’s used his own earnings from internships to fund his work. He’s tackled everything from designing and prototyping to patenting and is now developing a solid business strategy. He has developed a website and is engaging followers on social media. On top of all that, he has built a team to help him bring his vision to life. His ability to recruit and work with others says a lot about his leadership skills. No matter what obstacles have come his way, he has stayed focused and determined to keep moving forward. Remarkably, he has done all of this while balancing the demands of being a civil engineering student at WVU Tech. His journey is great example of what’s possible when you combine passion with determination, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. It’s our pleasure to present this award to Manuel Furmento.

Community Advocate of the Year: Ryan Thorn

Presented by Jina Belcher, Executive Director, NRGRDA

“This award is bittersweet for me however I’m grateful I have the honor of introducing this year’s Community Advocate of the Year, my dear friend and colleague, Ryan Thorn.

I first met Ryan almost 15 years ago during his time working in public relations with Cliffs Natural Resources. Ryan visted my family’s food bank in McDowell County WV to present my parents a donation from Cliffs to help support their mission. While we were both much younger and very clueless as to where life would lead us, I remember my mom saying “He’s so nice. I sure hope he sticks around” and man, has he ever. For the last 12 years, he’s continued to hand me checks.

Ryan has been a true force of nature for the State of WV and her people. Most of us met Ryan during his time as economic development director for Senator Joe Manchin’s office. He worked tirelessly to scatter the entire state with new opportunities, innovative solutions, and unprecedented investment. He’s earned the respect and trust of communities, decision makers, and funding agencies throughout the US. In his most recent role as the USDA Rural Development State Director, his leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on this state, and while we celebrate his accomplishments today, we can’t help but feel the bittersweetness as his role comes to an end under the Biden-Harris Administration.

We do not take this award lightly as it is given to an individual who exemplifies extraordinary commitment to the WV Hive and its mission. Ryan is the very definition of this. Through strategic collaboration, innovative thinking, and tireless support, he has become an invaluable partner in advancing our shared vision. Ryan’s passion for the small business community is evident in everything he does. He has been a steadfast champion for entrepreneurs in southern West Virginia, working to address their challenges, celebrate their successes, and elevate their voices on both local and national stages.

More than just a partner, Ryan has been an outspoken and visible advocate for the WV Hive, spreading the word about our programs and our impact, and inspiring others to join the cause. His exceptional leadership and influence have created an environment where small businesses can not only survive but thrive, fostering a culture of growth and opportunity that will continue to ripple far into the future. Ryan, your dedication, leadership, and friendship have meant so much to all of us. We know this is not a farewell but rather a new chapter in your incredible journey of service and advocacy. Ryan, thank you for being an adovace for, and investor in, and a partner to, ALL of West Virginia – ‘We sure hope you stick around.’ Please join us in celebrating the 2024 WV Hive Community Advocate of the Year, Ryan Thorn.”

Vendor of the Year: Monika Jaensson, Jaensson Law, PLLC

Presented by Judy Moore, Executive Director, WV Hive, and Deputy Director, NRGRDA

“2018 marked a significant year for the West Virginia Hive. During this time, we brought Monika Jaensson on board as a trusted vendor to support our growing initiatives. At that point, WV Hive was operating under the Appalachian Regional Commission grant, which provided funding to assist clients with prototyping new products. To effectively guide clients through processes like patenting, trademarking, and licensing, we needed a knowledgeable and dedicated vendor—and we found exactly that in Monika.

However, this award is about more than simply being a vendor. It recognizes exceptional dedication and commitment, and Monika has consistently gone above and beyond. She has formed genuine relationships with every client we have contracted her to support, always prioritizing their success. For Monika, it’s never just about completing the work or receiving payment—it’s about ensuring our clients’ success.

Beyond her professional services, Monika has served as a strong mentor to our clients and has generously supported our CO.STARTERS training program on numerous occasions. Whether as a guest speaker or offering guidance, her expertise and willingness to share her time and knowledge have been invaluable.
